Swan Pool in Sandwell Valley Country Park was 'eerily quiet' on Monday morning, just two days after emergency services recovered a woman's body from the water. A journalist visiting the scene described the atmosphere as subdued, with only geese, a cyclist, a couple of dog walkers, and a lone man on a bench as company.
The pool, usually bustling with visitors, was silent except for the distant hum of traffic from the M5 and occasional bird calls. Litter was evident, with overflowing bins, plastic bags, paper plates, and coffee cups scattered along the footpath. Scorch marks in the grass indicated that visitors had ignored the strict no-barbecue rule.
Emergency Response on Saturday Evening
Emergency services were called to Swan Pool at around 4:30pm on Saturday, June 27, after a woman went missing in the water. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. West Midlands Police confirmed that her death is not being treated as suspicious and that they are liaising with the coroner.
The only sign of the tragedy was an A4 notice stapled to a noticeboard from West Midlands Fire Service, warning of a 'water incident in the area.' The notice urged people to be aware of hidden dangers such as strong currents, cold temperatures, and submerged hazards, and advised calling 999 rather than entering the water to attempt a rescue.
Community Reaction on Social Media
Following the incident, locals took to social media to express their condolences. One Facebook user wrote: 'So sad, I hope all the emergency personnel get the support they need after this tragic event.' Another said: 'RIP to that lady. Thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this sad time.' A third added: 'Poor lady. I hope she’s sleeping peacefully with the angels.'
The woman has not yet been named by authorities. The pool, part of Sandwell Valley Country Park, remains open to the public, but the somber mood was palpable during the Monday morning visit.
