Violent Thug Receives 14-Year Sentence for Glass Bottle Stabbing in Burton-upon-Trent

A violent thug from the Midlands has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after stabbing a man in the stomach with a broken glass bottle during a confrontation over an attempted shop theft. Marc Bell, 30, of Burton-upon-Trent, carried out the brutal attack on December 17, 2024, leaving his victim with serious injuries.

Details of the Violent Incident

The incident began when Bell entered a shop on High Street in Burton-upon-Trent and filled a bag with items. He attempted to leave without paying, which led to a physical altercation when he was confronted by another individual. During the scuffle, Bell smashed a glass bottle on the floor and used the broken shards to stab the man in the stomach, causing significant harm.

After the attack, Bell fled the scene and entered a nearby restaurant, where he changed his clothes in an attempt to evade capture. He later discarded his original outfit in a bush. Despite these efforts, he was arrested shortly afterward by Staffordshire Police.

Additional Assault and Court Proceedings

While in police custody, Bell further demonstrated his violent behavior by punching a custody detention officer through the custody hatch. This assault on an emergency worker added to the charges against him.

Bell appeared at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to multiple offenses at an earlier hearing. These included section 18 wounding with intent, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, robbery, and assault by beating of an emergency worker. On Friday, April 10, 2026, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Police Response and Community Safety

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Reece Hingley from Staffordshire Police's CID commented on the case. He stated, "Bell caused his victim serious injuries, and despite running away and changing his clothes, he was arrested shortly after. The attack was violent and spontaneous, and I hope this sentence shows we are committed to protecting victims across Staffordshire."

This case highlights the ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to address violent crime and ensure community safety in the Staffordshire region. The severe sentence reflects the gravity of Bell's actions and serves as a deterrent against similar offenses.
