Travellers Occupy Car Park Near Solihull Schools, Eviction Process Initiated
A group of travellers has taken over the car park at Green Lane Park in Solihull, sparking significant community concerns. Approximately half a dozen caravans, along with cars and a lorry, have occupied the area, which is located next to Reynalds Cross School and opposite Mill Lodge Primary School.
The encampment was established on Thursday, March 19, 2026, leading to immediate action from local authorities. Councillor Prish Sharma is actively working to initiate eviction proceedings, emphasizing the need to follow legal procedures while expediting the process.
Community Concerns and Police Involvement
Residents have expressed worries about the disruption, citing past incidents where travellers left litter in other parks. Councillor Sharma visited the site with West Midlands Police and later addressed concerned residents at Shirley Community Centre.
He stated, "They are taking up all of the car park. Residents are concerned because other travellers have left litter in other parks. We want to get them off the site." Sharma added that the council must adhere to legal eviction protocols, which can be time-consuming, but he is maintaining pressure on officers to speed up the process within legal limits.
Impact on Local Amenities
Green Lane Park, which holds a Green Flag status, is a valued community asset featuring:
- A football pitch
- Play facilities for children of all ages
- Proximity to Shirley Station and two bus routes
- Peaceful walks along the River Cole
- Wildflower meadows
The occupation of the car park has disrupted access to these amenities, particularly affecting families and school operations in the area.
Ongoing Monitoring and Updates
Councillor Sharma is treating this situation as a priority, closely monitoring developments and promising to keep the community informed. "I understand the disruption this causes to our community and will keep you updated as the situation progresses," he assured residents.
The eviction process is underway, with authorities balancing legal requirements against the need to restore normalcy to the park and its surroundings.
