Tragic Death of Rough Sleeper in Northampton

A homeless man died from catastrophic injuries after he was tipped into the back of a refuse lorry while sleeping in an industrial bin. Sajmir Beca, 30, was fatally injured during the early hours of October 31 in Northampton town centre.

Emergency Response and Fatal Injuries

Emergency crews raced to Wellington Street at around 3am after the bin lorry driver alerted the authorities. Disturbing footage circulated online showing the victim's upper body visible among the rubbish in the vehicle.

Mr Beca was transported to University Hospital Coventry but sadly succumbed to his injuries on November 6.

Inquest Opened and Cause of Death

An inquest into his death began on Wednesday, November 22 at Northampton's Guildhall. Senior coroner Anne Pember confirmed the medical cause of death as multiple organ failure resulting from extensive crush injuries to his pelvis and lower limbs.

The full inquest, which will hear evidence from Mr Beca's sibling and the police, has been postponed until April 29.

Community and Corporate Response

Northamptonshire Police stated there are no suspicious circumstances and a report has been prepared for the coroner. The homelessness charity Project 16:15 confirmed Mr Beca was known to them, highlighting the vital importance of their work to shelter rough sleepers.

Waste contractor Veolia, which manages the commercial bins, expressed deep sadness and offered condolences to the man's loved ones. A spokesperson said: "Sadly, in the winter months we see an increase in the number of people taking shelter in bins. We will continue to work with colleagues and clients to raise awareness of this."
