DWP Announces Universal Credit Boost: 4 Million Households to Receive £295 Extra
Universal Credit Boost: 4 Million to Get £295 Extra

Major Universal Credit Overhaul Brings Financial Boost to Millions

The Department for Work and Pensions has unveiled a significant enhancement to the Universal Credit system, marking what it describes as a "first" in sustained support. Approximately four million households receiving the standard rate of Universal Credit will see their payments increase by around £295 in cash terms during the current year.

Above-Inflation Increase and Expanded Support

This financial uplift represents approximately £110 above the inflation rate for a single individual aged twenty-five or older. The DWP emphasizes that this initiative delivers the first sustained, above-inflation increase to Universal Credit's standard allowance in the program's history.

Concurrently, the department is rolling out enhanced voluntary employment support for all individuals affected by these Universal Credit changes. Since March 2025, more than sixty-five thousand people with limited capability for work and work-related activity have already taken advantage of this offer, surpassing initial participation targets.

Government Statements on Welfare Reform

Labour Party Minister for Social Security and Disability, Sir Stephen Timms, commented on the changes, stating: "The welfare system we inherited has for too long locked disabled people and people with long-term conditions out of work. Laws coming into force today will change that, reducing projected expenditure on Universal Credit by almost one billion pounds."

He added: "Simultaneously boosting the standard allowance and investing three point five billion pounds in employment support means we're creating a welfare system that backs people to work and helps them build a better future."

Detailed Payment Increases and Long-Term Plan

The DWP confirmed that the four rates of standard allowance will rise above the inflation rate in each fiscal year from 2026/27 through 2029/30. Specific monthly rate increases effective from April 2026 include:

  • £338.58 for single claimants under twenty-five
  • £424.90 for single claimants aged twenty-five and over
  • £528.34 for couples where both partners are under twenty-five
  • £666.97 for couples where both partners are twenty-five or older

The government announced these comprehensive changes on Monday, April 6, positioning them as a major boost for the new tax year. According to the DWP, the previous system created disparities where individuals receiving the Universal Credit health top-up were paid more than twice as much as a single person on the standard rate who was actively seeking employment, yet received no additional support to transition into work.

This overhaul aims to address those imbalances while providing tangible financial relief and improved employment pathways for millions of households across the nation.
