MAFS Expert Mel Schilling Reveals Terminal Cancer Diagnosis

Married at First Sight Australia relationship expert Mel Schilling has publicly announced that she is living with terminal cancer. The 54-year-old psychologist shared this heartbreaking news in an emotional Instagram post, detailing her nearly two-year battle with the disease.

Emotional Health Update Shared on Social Media

In her Friday Instagram message, Mel Schilling revealed that after extensive treatment, doctors have informed her that no further medical options remain available. "I honestly don't know how long I have left," she wrote. "But I do know I will fight to my last breath and will be surrounded by the love and support of my people."

The announcement comes just weeks after Schilling stated she would step back from her role on the popular reality television show to focus on her health. She has been a relationship expert on Married at First Sight Australia since joining the program in 2016.

Two-Year Cancer Battle Detailed

Schilling reflected on her initial diagnosis in December 2023, when doctors discovered a lemon-sized tumor during a scan. "'Terry,' as I called him, was successfully removed and I was initially given the all clear," she explained in her post.

However, the cancer returned months later, spreading to her lungs. Despite this devastating development, Schilling continued filming the reality series while undergoing intensive treatment over the following two years.

Her treatment regimen included:

  • Sixteen rounds of chemotherapy
  • Qualification for a promising clinical trial specific to her genetic profile
  • Radiotherapy sessions after the cancer spread to her brain

Recent Health Decline and Final Message

During the Christmas period, Schilling began experiencing severe symptoms including blinding headaches and numbness down her right side. Subsequent tests revealed the cancer had spread to the left side of her brain.

"Despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do," she shared. "Hearing those words changes everything. So that's where I am now. My light is starting to fade – and quickly."

Schilling emphasized that simple tasks have become incredibly difficult, and she now relies on her family for care and support. She also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from viewers and followers since first speaking publicly about her illness.

In her final message to followers, Schilling offered crucial advice: "If I could leave you with one thing, it would simply be this: if something doesn't feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life."

Network Support and Show Background

Following Schilling's announcement, broadcaster Nine Entertainment released a statement expressing strong support. "[Mel] is a woman of extraordinary depth, kindness, and an unshakeable spirit," the network stated. "She isn't just a colleague; she is family. Our thoughts, love, and strength are with Mel, her husband, Gareth, and her daughter, Maddie, during this incredibly difficult time."

Married at First Sight Australia debuted in 2015 and has become one of the country's most discussed television programs, regularly attracting millions of viewers despite ongoing controversy surrounding its format. Schilling has been an integral part of the show's success throughout her twelve-year tenure as a relationship expert.
