Veterinary surgeon Dr Suzanne Moyes has issued an urgent health warning for anyone considering getting a Cockapoo, one of Britain's most beloved dog breeds. The breed has surged in popularity in recent years due to its adorable looks and friendly nature, but Dr Moyes highlights several health conditions they are prone to, including obesity and hip dysplasia.
Popular Breed, Hidden Risks
Cockapoos, a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, are often believed to be easy to care for, but Dr Moyes, working with Green Pantry, cautions that potential owners should think twice. She says: "Small breeds like Cockapoos are especially popular, not just for their adorable looks but also for their affectionate and friendly nature. These dogs have big personalities and make excellent companions, particularly for families seeking a loving and loyal pet." However, she warns that health complications can pose a worry.
Obesity: A Key Concern
According to Waggel, Cockapoos have a typical lifespan of 12-15 years, influenced by genetics, general health, and diet. Dr Moyes identifies obesity as a major health challenge, which can lead to joint issues and diabetes. She recommends: "This is easily remedied with a healthy and balanced diet and ensuring everybody is aligned on what the dog should and should not be fed. As tempting as it can be to slip your pet some food from your plate, this is one of the leading causes of obesity in dogs."
Hip Dysplasia and Other Issues
Another concern is hip dysplasia, a commonly inherited condition where the hip joint develops abnormally, causing instability and discomfort. Dr Moyes explains: "Hip dysplasia is an issue that can be exacerbated by obesity. While you can't always prevent joint problems such as hip dysplasia, there is much you can do to help. For example, try to ensure they get regular exercise, and you could consider complementary therapeutic regimes such as hydrotherapy or laser therapy." She notes that while these conditions are not guaranteed to affect every dog, with attentive care, Cockapoos can still enjoy fulfilling, healthy lives.
