Wood Grange Care Home Celebrates Resident's 107th Birthday Milestone
Joyful celebrations unfolded at Wood Grange Care Home in Bourne as resident Ethel reached the impressive age of 107. The special occasion brought together staff, relatives, and fellow residents to honor her landmark birthday.
Royal Recognition and Festive Reception
Ethel received a telegram from the King, acknowledging her remarkable achievement. A champagne reception was held at the home, featuring a custom birthday cake crafted by chef Radovan and decorated by nurse Simona, adding a personal touch to the festivities.
A Life of Remarkable Achievements
Born in Doncaster, Ethel has led an extraordinary life. In 1940, she joined the RAF, becoming one of the first radar operators on the South Coast during World War II, playing a crucial role in the early days of radar technology. After the war, she and her husband, James, built a loving family, including a daughter, a son, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Personal Passions and Birthday Secrets
Outside her family, Ethel has a deep love for singing, often performing her favorite songs nightly to help herself sleep. She also cherished trips to the seaside and peaceful, quiet places for relaxation. When asked about her secret to longevity, Ethel shared, "The secret is having a glass of wine with lunch and dinner."
Community Contributions and Heartfelt Thanks
The celebration was enhanced by generous community support. Helen Sharpe of Sharpe Shots volunteered to capture photographs, while Dom Brister, leader of the Don't Lose Hope Community and Shed Charity, provided a special musical performance. Gold '107' balloons were donated by the local Card Factory, and an incredible 291 birthday cards arrived from schools, nurseries, businesses, and community members, with many handcrafted. Ethel expressed her gratitude, saying, "Heavens, but how can I thank all of them?"
