West Midlands Couple Celebrates 72nd Valentine's Day with Timeless Love Secrets
Couple's 72nd Valentine's Day: Secrets to Lasting Marriage

A devoted couple from Sutton Coldfield is celebrating an incredible 72nd Valentine's Day together, offering their cherished secrets to a lifelong partnership filled with love and devotion. Pat Daniel, aged 90 and a resident at Care UK's Mercia Grange on Lichfield Road, emphasizes that the foundation of a lasting relationship lies in being "caring, loving, and considerate." Her husband, Colin, visits her daily at the care home, showcasing their unwavering bond.

A Cup of Tea That Sparked a Lifetime Together

Pat and Colin, both originally from Handsworth, first crossed paths when they were just 18 years old. Colin was a friend of Pat's brother, and their connection blossomed during a simple yet memorable encounter. Pat recalls, "It was my brother's birthday, and Colin didn't drink at all that night. He asked for a cup of tea, and I was the one to make him that cup of tea." This thoughtful gesture quickly drew them together, leading to an inseparable romance.

A Valentine's Day Proposal to Remember

Three years after their first meeting, Colin chose Valentine's Day to propose in a truly special manner. He took Pat to a hotel restaurant in Handsworth, where he got down on one knee. Upon returning home, they were greeted by Pat's family, who had gathered to celebrate the joyous occasion. "It was a lovely and nice surprise," Pat fondly remembers, highlighting the warmth of that moment.

Secrets to a Marriage That Stands the Test of Time

When asked about the key to their enduring marriage, Colin humorously yet sincerely advises, "To say yes to everything Pat asks me to and to keep quiet." This lighthearted approach underscores their mutual respect and understanding, which have been pivotal over the decades.

Celebrating Love with Tradition and Care

To commemorate the anniversary of Colin's proposal, the couple plans to uphold their long-standing tradition of an evening meal. The team at Mercia Grange has organized a special private dining experience for them, ensuring the celebration is as meaningful as ever. Michael McNelis, Home Manager at Mercia Grange, shares, "Each time Colin visits Pat, her face lights up; their dedication to each other is truly inspiring to all of us."

He adds, "Moving into a care home doesn't mean the end of celebrating special milestones. Valentine's Day is a date many couples who live with us look forward to every year, but it's even more special for Colin and Pat, as it marks the anniversary of their engagement – so we knew we had to help them celebrate in the best possible way. It has been really lovely to hear all about what drew Colin and Pat together. It's also given everyone else at the home an opportunity to reminisce, so it's safe to say love is definitely in the air at Mercia Grange!"
