Terry Burnham, a former Ilkeston firefighter, was able to spend his final days in the place where he felt most secure, thanks to the dedicated support of the Treetops Hospice at Home service. After receiving diagnoses of vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease, Terry's family endured months of uncertainty and sleepless nights, struggling to provide the care he needed.
Specialist Nursing Care in Derbyshire
The Treetops Hospice, based in Risley, intervened to deliver specialist end-of-life nursing care across southern and central Derbyshire. This charity's nurses offer expert support directly in patients' own homes, which profoundly impacted Terry's loved ones by allowing him to stay in familiar surroundings.
Family Reassurance and Support
Terry's son, Mark, emphasized that the assistance went far beyond simple nurse check-ins. "I can't describe the enormity of what Treetops does for the bigger picture," Mark stated. "Having them around gave our family the reassurance and breathing space we needed to focus on one another and on our own day-to-day responsibilities."
Terry was remembered as a true family man who served for over two decades at Ilkeston Fire Station. In a heartfelt tribute to his father's legacy, Mark followed Terry's footsteps by becoming a firefighter at the same station, honoring his dedication and service.
Becoming Part of the Family
As Terry's condition advanced, the Treetops nurses became so integrated into their lives that they felt like an extension of the Burnham family. Mark shared, "The biggest compliment I can pay to Treetops is how naturally their visits became part of our lives. It wasn't the nurse from Treetops anymore – it was Rachel, it was Jackie, it was Yvonne."
"We knew them all, and they became a part of our family rather than the external strangers we had imagined," he added, highlighting the personal connections that developed.
Vital Night-Time Assistance
The roaming nurses provided crucial help during nighttime hours, enabling Terry's wife, Lyn, and their children to obtain much-needed rest. This support allowed Lyn, who had been married to Terry for 60 years, to transition from being a full-time carer back to simply being his wife, easing her burden significantly.
Peaceful Passing with Family
When Terry passed away on September 18, 2025, he was surrounded by his family while a Treetops nurse offered comfort to both him and Lyn. Mark reflected, "Dad was able to pass away with his close family around him, he saw his grandchildren the day he died, and we were all there with him. As a family man, I know it is exactly what he would have wanted."
The Treetops Hospice at Home service not only provided medical care but also emotional support, ensuring Terry's final moments were peaceful and dignified in the comfort of his own home.
