Parents and educators are being urged to immediately stop using a specific children's educational kit sold by Hobbycraft, following the discovery of potential asbestos contamination. This marks the second such recall involving the retailer within just 48 hours, raising significant concerns about product safety standards.
Urgent Product Withdrawal Announced
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has confirmed the formal recall of the My Living World Worm Kit. The educational science set, designed for observing live earthworms through layered sand and soil, has been identified as containing sand that "may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos."
Authorities have issued a stark warning, stating the product presents a direct risk to health and does not comply with the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. The specific batch affected carries the code 5830641000.
Immediate Actions Required for Consumers
The OPSS has mandated that the kit be withdrawn from the market and recalled from all end users. Consumers in possession of the product are instructed to take the following critical steps without delay:
- Cease use immediately and ensure the product is kept well away from children.
- If the sand vials remain unopened, place them in a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it securely with double tape, label it clearly, and store it in a safe location.
- If the sand has been used, clean the area with wet cloths to prevent dust generation. Wear protective gloves and a mask during cleanup. All contaminated materials, including the sand, gloves, mask, and cloths, must be double-bagged.
- Return the sand vials to the nearest Hobbycraft store for a full refund. If a store visit is not possible, dispose of the sand in general household waste after following the safety procedures and contact Hobbycraft customer service to arrange a refund.
Understanding the Health Hazard
Asbestos is a strictly banned substance due to its severe health implications, even at minimal exposure levels. Inhaling asbestos fibres can lead to serious lung diseases, including cancer, making this recall particularly alarming for a product marketed towards children.
This incident follows another recent recall of a different Hobbycraft craft kit for similar asbestos concerns, highlighting a troubling pattern. The OPSS has indicated that "additional distributors will be added to this list, and further instructions provided, as recalls are launched," suggesting the situation may still be developing.
