Urgent Safety Warning Issued for Children's Toy Over Asbestos Fears
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has escalated its alerts with a new recall targeting a popular children's toy that may contain asbestos, a banned toxic substance. This latest warning, issued on February 23, 2026, follows a series of similar recalls for kids' products, heightening concerns among parents and caregivers across the UK.
Details of the Recalled Product
The affected item is a Colour Day branded Sand Art Activity Kit, which includes 10 bags of coloured sand, 10 bottles, and various tools. Sold through major online platforms like eBay and Amazon, this kit has been identified as posing a significant health risk. According to the OPSS, the sand may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos, a material prohibited due to its severe health hazards even at minimal exposure levels.
The product fails to comply with the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011, prompting immediate action from retailers. Both eBay and Amazon have initiated recalls, and the OPSS strongly advises owners to cease using the product at once and ensure it is kept away from children to prevent any potential exposure.
Health Risks and Disposal Guidelines
Asbestos exposure is linked to serious respiratory diseases, including lung cancer and mesothelioma, making this recall critical for public safety. The OPSS has provided detailed disposal instructions to mitigate risks:
- Stop using the product immediately.
- If the sand is still sealed in its packaging, place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double-tape it securely, label it clearly, and store it in a secure location out of children's reach.
- If the sand has been used, clean affected areas with wet cloths to avoid dust generation. Wear gloves and a mask during cleanup, and double-bag all materials, including sand, gloves, masks, and cloths.
- Keep children and others away from cleaned areas until fully sanitized.
- Contact the distributor for a full refund and dispose of the product in general household waste.
This recall underscores ongoing challenges in product safety enforcement and highlights the importance of vigilance when purchasing toys, especially from online marketplaces. Parents are urged to check their homes for this kit and follow the OPSS guidelines to protect their families from potential harm.
