More than 75 firefighters from West Midlands Fire Service were deployed to combat a major industrial fire that tore through a large carpet storage factory in Birmingham overnight.
Fire Engulfs Two-Storey Factory Unit
The significant blaze was first reported at 19:13 on Wednesday, 7 January 2026, at the Tyseley Industrial Estate on Steeleys Road. The fire rapidly consumed 100% of a two-storey brick-built factory measuring approximately 100 metres by 40 metres.
At the height of the incident, the fire service mobilised a substantial response, including 14 fire engines, 3 hydraulic platforms, and specialist units. Crews utilised aerial drones and breathing apparatus in a concerted effort to bring the intense flames under control.
Overnight Battle and Ongoing Operations
Firefighters worked through the night confronting what was described as a "protracted incident." By the morning of Thursday, 8 January, the operation had been slightly scaled back, but seven fire crews remained on the scene to continue damping down and monitoring hotspots.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service stated: "Crews are making good progress at this fire. We've reduced our resources to seven crews."
Public Advised to Avoid the Area
Local authorities have issued continued safety warnings following the huge Birmingham factory fire. Partial road closures remain active on Steeleys Road and members of the public are strongly advised to avoid the vicinity of the Tyseley Industrial Estate where possible.
Residents in the local area were previously instructed to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution against smoke. The fire service is expected to provide further significant updates as the situation develops.
