Man in Critical Condition Following Medical Emergency in Birmingham City Centre
A man is fighting for his life after suffering a serious medical episode on a busy street in Birmingham city centre. The incident occurred on Corporation Street, near New Street and The Ramp, shortly after 3pm on Thursday, January 29.
Emergency Response and Advanced Life Support
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, where they found the man in a critical condition. Police officers initially stepped in to perform CPR before paramedics arrived. According to a spokeswoman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service, two paramedics and two critical care paramedics were dispatched to the location.
The ambulance staff immediately took over to administer advanced life support, and the man was then conveyed on blue lights to the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital for further treatment. Screens were put up at the roadside to protect the patient's privacy during the emergency response.
Eyewitness Account and Community Concerns
Eyewitness Ken Bonham described the scene, stating, "Someone suffered a medical emergency in Corporation Street. Two ambulances and several police cars attended." He added, "We hope the patient recovers and our thoughts are with them and their loved ones."
The latest condition of the man is not currently known, leaving the community awaiting updates on his recovery.
Transport Disruption and Road Clearance
The incident caused significant disruption to the West Midlands Metro tram network. Due to an ambulance blocking the track, trams were only operating between Bull Street and Wolverhampton Station, with no service running between Bull Street and Edgbaston Village, affecting stops at New Street Station, the town hall, and the library.
The Metro team apologised for the inconvenience, and the road was eventually cleared at around 6.30pm, allowing normal services to resume.
