Man dies after being pulled from Grand Union Canal in Warwick

A man has died after being rescued from the Grand Union Canal in Warwick, following a major emergency services response on Sunday evening.

Emergency Call and Response

Warwickshire Police were alerted by a member of the public at just before 7pm on Sunday, January 18. The caller reported seeing a man in the water near the area of Charles Street and Montague Road.

A large-scale emergency response was immediately mobilised. West Midlands Ambulance Service dispatched two ambulances, a paramedic officer, and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Critical Care Car to the scene near Emscote Road.

Critical Condition and Hospital Dash

On arrival, crews found a man, believed to be in his 70s, in what was described as a 'critical condition'. Paramedics administered advanced life support at the scene.

The patient was then conveyed to Warwick Hospital under emergency driving conditions for further treatment. Despite the best efforts of all medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead just before midnight.

Police Confirm Details

Warwick Police provided an update on their Facebook page, thanking the member of the public who made the initial 999 call. They confirmed that the man's next of kin have been informed.

The police statement added: "We’ve spoken to his next of kin and his death is not being treated as suspicious. Thank you to the person who called it in, to everyone who offered help and we just want to say how much we appreciate your understanding while we dealt with a difficult incident."

The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers posed by open water, especially during the cold winter months.
