Met Office Issues Snow Warnings for 57 UK Areas on Friday

The Met Office has activated two separate yellow weather warnings for snow and ice, impacting 57 specific areas across the United Kingdom. These alerts are set to commence on Thursday, February 12, and extend into Friday, February 13, with the most severe conditions anticipated in northern regions.

Widespread Snowfall Expected

According to meteorological forecasts, the warnings cover extensive parts of Scotland and England, where snowfall could persist for up to 12 hours. In the hardest-hit locations, accumulations may reach as much as 10 centimetres, leading to potential disruptions. The snow flurries are predicted to occur before midday on Friday, after which the alerts will be lifted.

Jo Farrow, a meteorologist from Netweather TV, commented on the shifting conditions, stating, "There is a change on the way. Instead of just rain warnings, there is a shift to Snow & Ice warnings later on Thursday and for Friday." She noted that the UK will experience a brief turn to colder weather by the end of the week, followed by sunshine on Saturday, offering a respite from recent wet and gloomy conditions.

Regional Impacts and Forecast Details

The Met Office's forecast for Thursday indicates that rain in the north will push southwards, allowing brighter skies to develop across Scotland. However, snow showers are expected in the northeast. Persistent rain is likely in Wales and southeast England, with hill snow across northern England, while sunny spells may appear in the southwest. As temperatures drop further north, conditions will turn cold.

For Thursday evening, the forecast adds that rain and hill snow will slowly move southwards, with clearer spells developing in the north. This will lead to widespread frost and icy patches. Variable cloud cover in the south may bring occasional heavy showers.
