NHS Urges Over-80s to Book RSV Vaccination Appointments from April
Over-80s Urged to Book RSV Vaccine from April

State pensioners aged 80 and over are being strongly encouraged to schedule a doctor's appointment from April onwards for a crucial health reason. The NHS is expanding its vaccination programme to include this age group, offering protection against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which can pose serious risks to older adults.

Expanded NHS Vaccine Programme for Older Adults

From April 1st, 2026, the NHS will extend its RSV vaccination initiative to include adults aged 80 years and over, as well as all residents in care homes for older adults. This expansion follows advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), with the government confirming the rollout to help protect those most vulnerable to severe outcomes from RSV infection.

Understanding RSV and Its Risks

Respiratory syncytial virus is a common cause of coughs and colds, typically producing mild symptoms that resolve independently. However, for babies and older adults, RSV infections can sometimes develop into more serious conditions.

Common symptoms associated with RSV include:

  • A runny or blocked nose
  • Persistent coughing
  • Sneezing and general fatigue
  • Elevated body temperature

While most cases remain mild, RSV has the potential to progress to more severe respiratory infections such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis, particularly in vulnerable populations.

Background of the RSV Vaccination Programme

The NHS initially launched its RSV vaccination programme in September 2024, targeting adults turning 75 years old and pregnant women from 28 weeks of pregnancy. At that time, a one-off catch-up initiative was also introduced for those aged between 75 and 79 years.

The government's decision to expand the programme came on February 2nd, 2026, following careful consideration of JCVI recommendations. Health officials determined that offering vaccination to additional vulnerable groups would provide significant benefits in preventing serious illness.

Eligibility and Appointment Information

The expanded programme will offer RSV vaccination to:

  1. Adults aged 80 years and over
  2. All residents in care homes for older adults

This is in addition to the existing programme which continues to cover:

  • Adults turning 75 years
  • Adults aged 75 to 79 years when the programme began
  • Pregnant women (to protect their newborn babies)

Eligible older people will be able to receive both RSV and COVID-19 vaccinations during the same appointment once the spring Coronavirus jab rollout commences on April 13th. Pensioners are advised to book their RSV vaccination appointment from April onwards once they receive an invitation from their general practitioner.

Government and Health Official Statements

Health Minister Stephen Kinnock emphasised the importance of this expanded vaccination initiative, stating: "By expanding this life-saving vaccination programme to also include adults aged 80 and over, and residents in care homes for older adults, we are taking another important step to protect those most at risk."

He continued: "I am pleased to accept the advice from the JCVI, which has carefully reviewed the evidence showing the clear benefits of extending this programme. I would encourage everyone who becomes eligible for the RSV vaccine from April to come forward and get vaccinated as soon as they have been invited to do so by their GP."

The minister further highlighted that getting vaccinated represents the best way for individuals to protect themselves while simultaneously reducing pressure on NHS services during the challenging winter months.

This proactive approach to elderly healthcare aims to prevent serious respiratory illnesses before they develop, potentially saving lives and reducing hospital admissions among the most vulnerable members of society.
