A Birmingham-based pharmacist has issued a stark warning about the "serious harm" posed by purchasing weight loss medication from unlicensed online sellers, as official figures reveal a dramatic surge in seizures of falsified injections across the United Kingdom.
Rocketing Seizures of Unlicensed Weight Loss Medications
Following a Freedom of Information request, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) disclosed that enforcement authorities seized 5,851 falsified or unlicensed weight loss injections during the previous year. This represents an astonishing increase from the 407 seizures recorded in 2023, highlighting a rapidly expanding underground market for these potentially dangerous products.

Ahsan Bhatti, the superintendent pharmacist at Frankley Pharmacy in Rubery, Birmingham, explained that illegal online sellers are employing increasingly sophisticated methods to target vulnerable individuals seeking weight loss solutions. These operators are utilising advanced technologies including artificial intelligence to identify and approach potential customers through various digital platforms.
"Weight-loss medicines are prescription-only for a reason," Ahsan emphasised. "They're powerful treatments that require proper clinical assessment and ongoing medical oversight. Unfortunately, we're witnessing more people turning to websites or social media sellers offering shortcuts, often at significantly lower prices, without conducting any meaningful health checks - and that's profoundly concerning for both patients and the wider healthcare sector."
Identifying Legitimate Pharmacy Providers
Genuine UK pharmacies must maintain registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council and clearly display their registration details, including the name of their superintendent pharmacist and a physical UK address. Ahsan highlighted that the absence of proper consultation represents another major warning sign for consumers.
"Any pharmacy offering prescription medicines without conducting a thorough medical questionnaire or proper assessment should raise immediate concerns," he advised. "A legitimate consultation should carefully examine medical history, existing health conditions, and overall suitability for treatment. When this essential step is missing, patient safety is being dangerously compromised."
Significant Health Risks from Unregulated Medications
Unregulated medicines can pose substantial health dangers, including incorrect dosing, contamination with harmful substances, or inclusion of unknown ingredients. Without proper medical prescribing and follow-up care, patients may fail to recognise early signs of adverse side effects or developing complications.
Ahsan further cautioned: "Weight-loss medicines are not appropriate for everyone and should only be prescribed following appropriate clinical evaluation. Taking just a few minutes to verify credentials and understand the proper medical process can make the crucial difference between receiving safe, effective treatment and experiencing serious, potentially life-threatening harm."
