Thurrock Couple's Generous Donation Transforms Neonatal Care at Basildon Hospital

A Thurrock couple whose baby daughter was born 13 weeks prematurely has made a heartfelt donation of £9,450 to Basildon Hospital. This significant contribution is specifically aimed at supporting other families facing the daunting challenges of premature birth by enhancing specialist care for the hospital's most vulnerable infants.

Funding a Dedicated Milk Kitchen for Parental Independence

The donated funds will be used to establish a milk kitchen within Basildon Hospital's neonatal unit. This new facility will provide parents and carers with a dedicated, safe space to prepare their babies' feeds and sterilize essential equipment themselves. Danielle and Chris Batley, residents of Horndon-on-the-Hill, spent ten weeks in the unit last summer after their daughter Iris was born prematurely.

Danielle Batley expressed her gratitude, stating: "We can only thank the staff at Basildon for all the support they gave us whilst Iris was in the neonatal unit. That is why we have raised this money." The couple highlighted their personal struggles with lacking independence to clean and sterilize equipment for expressing milk or preparing bottles while caring for Iris in the unit.

Enhancing Parental Involvement and Reducing Stress

Lucy Lisle, the senior neonatal unit sister, emphasized the emotional toll on parents. "It can be incredibly hard for parents in our unit; on top of the worry and exhaustion of having an unwell baby, they often feel less involved in their newborn's care than they'd hoped," she explained. "Having the chance to prepare their baby's bottles and sterilize pumps and bottles themselves will mean so much to them."

The new preparation area is designed to empower parents by allowing them to sterilize their own equipment in a controlled environment without needing to rely on nurses, thereby fostering a greater sense of involvement and reducing additional stress during an already difficult time.

Iris's Journey and Fundraising Efforts

Iris, now seven months old, required oxygen support until recently but is currently thriving. She made a special return visit to the neonatal unit to assist her parents in presenting the donation cheque. The £9,450 was raised through a combination of a charity golf day, which generated £5,000, and an open day at the couple's flower farm located in Essex.

This initiative not only addresses practical needs but also builds a supportive community for families navigating premature births, ensuring that future parents have better resources and a more comfortable experience during their stay at Basildon Hospital.
