Stepping Hill Hospital Lifts Norovirus Visiting Restrictions

Temporary visiting restrictions at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, Greater Manchester, have been officially lifted after several days in place due to a high number of norovirus cases. The restrictions, which were implemented as a precautionary measure to protect vulnerable patients, were removed on Friday, February 27, following a thorough review by hospital authorities.

Hospital Spokesperson Issues Statement

A spokesperson for Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, which operates the hospital, confirmed the decision. "Following our latest review of cases of norovirus on wards at Stepping Hill Hospital, we are glad to announce that the temporary visiting restrictions we announced last week have been lifted. Visiting is once again allowed on our wards," the spokesperson stated.

However, the message remains clear: vigilance is still crucial. "It is important however to remain vigilant against norovirus, as cases are still in circulation," the spokesperson emphasized.

Impact of Norovirus on Hospital Operations

Norovirus is not merely an unpleasant illness for those infected; it has significant repercussions for hospital operations. The spokesperson explained, "Norovirus impacts on our patients who are already ill, on colleagues who contract the virus, and on those who are working on affected wards. It also significantly impacts on patient flow, where whole wards are isolated with empty beds that can’t be filled until the virus has gone."

This disruption can lead to delays in patient care and increased pressure on hospital resources, highlighting the importance of preventive measures.

Key Advice for Visitors and the Public

To help prevent the spread of norovirus, health officials have issued specific guidelines:

  • If you experience any symptoms, do not visit the hospital for at least 48 hours after symptoms have completely stopped.
  • Symptoms to watch for include sudden nausea, vomiting (including projectile vomiting), diarrhoea, high temperature, abdominal pain, and aching limbs.
  • Regularly wash hands with soap and warm water, especially before visiting the hospital.

These measures are essential to protect patients, staff, and the wider community from further outbreaks.

Continued Caution Urged

While the lifting of restrictions is a positive step, the hospital trust stresses that norovirus remains a concern. The public is encouraged to adhere to hygiene practices and stay informed about health advisories. By working together, the spread of this highly contagious virus can be minimized, ensuring a safer environment for all at Stepping Hill Hospital.
