Mr John Edwards, a consultant in thoracic surgery and major trauma at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has been awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Chest Wall Injury Society for his pioneering work in repairing broken ribs using internal plates and screws.
Pioneering technique transforms chest trauma care
In 2006, Edwards became the first surgeon in the UK to stabilise a patient's broken ribs using titanium plates. This groundbreaking procedure laid the foundation for a national treatment programme for severe chest injuries. Over the past 20 years, he has taught these lifesaving techniques to medical professionals worldwide.
Dedicated clinic and specialist centre
In 2024, Edwards helped establish a dedicated chest wall clinic at the Northern General Hospital to support patients suffering from chronic pain. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is now one of only three specialist centres in Europe handling these complex repairs. His work has enabled many patients to return to normal life free from long-term agony.
Award and recognition
Edwards said: "I am deeply honoured to have been presented with this award from my peers. None of this would have been possible without the tireless support of my colleagues, so in receiving this award I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of the many teams I have worked with over the years, both locally, nationally and internationally."
He added: "Though surgical stabilisation of rib fractures is increasingly common, it is still a specialist and highly complex procedure reserved for a minority of very serious trauma cases which if not left to heal can lead to life-threatening consequences. It has been a privilege to develop this technique clinically, to advance knowledge nationally and internationally and above all to have made a profound difference to the lives of patients whose lives have been traumatised by severe injury."
