NHS Doctor Emily MacDonagh Opens Up About Unexpected Shingles Diagnosis
Emily MacDonagh, the wife of singer Peter Andre and a practicing NHS doctor, has publicly revealed her recent diagnosis with shingles. The 36-year-old mother of three shared her experience in a social media video, aiming to increase awareness about this often painful health condition.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Emily explained that she noticed unusual sensations and pain under her arm, followed by a rash appearing on one side of her back a few days later. "I noticed a pain and just odd sensations under my arm here and then a couple of days later the rash appeared on my back on one side," she said in her video update.
The doctor described her diagnosis as unexpected, stating: "It's definitely not something I expected to be dealing with, but hopefully sharing this does raise some awareness."
What is Shingles?
Shingles is an infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, which initially causes chickenpox. The condition typically presents with:
- A tingling or painful sensation in a specific skin area
- General feelings of unwellness or headache
- A rash that usually appears on one side of the body
Emily emphasized that while shingles itself isn't contagious, the virus can spread chickenpox to individuals who haven't had it before or haven't been vaccinated. She specifically advised avoiding contact with:
- Pregnant women who haven't had chickenpox
- People with weakened immune systems
- Babies under one month old
Raising Awareness Through Personal Experience
As an NHS professional, Emily used her platform to educate others about the condition. "I thought I'd do a quick video to explain what it is, in the hope it helps raise awareness for anyone who might not be familiar," she explained.
The doctor concluded her message with advice for others: "Let's just say... not exactly how I planned to spend the week, but a good reminder to listen to your body and get things checked if something doesn't feel right."
Emily shares three children with husband Peter Andre - Amelia, Theo, and Arabella. Peter also has two children from his previous marriage to Katie Price.
