Southeastern and Samaritans Unite for Small Talk Saves Lives Campaign
Southeastern Railway has announced a significant partnership with the charity Samaritans to support their Small Talk Saves Lives initiative, bringing a series of in-station events to communities across the railway network this month. This collaboration aims to highlight how simple, brief conversations can make a profound difference in preventing suicides and supporting individuals in distress.
Lifesaving Interventions and Public Perception
In the 2024-25 period, there were 2,284 lifesaving interventions on the railway, many initiated by staff members or members of the public who took the initiative to speak to someone in distress. Despite this positive impact, research commissioned by Samaritans reveals a concerning trend: 52% of respondents believe that small talk is a thing of the past, and 78% admit to avoiding it. However, most people indicate they would appreciate a few kind words if they were visibly upset, underscoring the importance of this campaign.
In-Station Events and Volunteer Engagement
From March 13 to 27, Samaritans volunteers will be available at key Southeastern stations to engage with customers and colleagues, discussing how a brief, kind conversation can help someone who may be struggling. These events are designed to empower individuals to take action and foster a safer railway environment.
Dave Brown, head of rail at Samaritans, emphasized: "We know that people are often worried about saying the wrong thing to someone who is visibly upset, but it's always better to say something than nothing at all. A brief chat, about the weather, or asking someone where they can grab a coffee, can be all it takes to interrupt those negative thoughts. Your words are a life-saving kit."
Mark Sutton, safeguarding manager at Southeastern, added: "We're really proud to partner with Samaritans on this important campaign and to host these Small Talk Saves Lives events across our network. Our colleagues encounter vulnerable people more often than most, but we also see kind and selfless acts from many passengers every day. We want to empower everyone to take action and to keep our railway safe."
Campaign Relaunch and Installation
Samaritans, in collaboration with Network Rail and British Transport Police, recently relaunched the campaign with 'Ticket to Talk', a striking installation at London Waterloo station. This installation features 2,284 tickets with small talk phrases, representing the number of potentially life-saving interactions on the railway last year, visually reinforcing the campaign's message.
