The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that millions of pensioners will receive a one-off £200 bonus payment later this year, on top of their regular state pension. The extra cash is part of the Winter Fuel Payment scheme for 2026, which is designed to help vulnerable older people keep warm during the colder months.
Who Is Eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment?
The winter allowance was once universal for all over-65s but is now linked to income. Eligible individuals will receive either £200 or £300, depending on their age. The money is usually paid into bank accounts during November.
There is now an income threshold for receiving Winter Fuel Payments. Retirees can keep the cash if their annual incomes are below £35,000. Those with higher incomes are considered financially comfortable enough to cope without the state boost. These households will initially receive the money, but it will later be claimed back by HMRC.
How Many Pensioners Will Benefit?
The majority of pensioners, around nine million, still qualify for the winter allowance. The DWP has confirmed the details of the scheme, ensuring that eligible pensioners receive the support they need.
For more information, pensioners are advised to check their eligibility and ensure their details are up to date with the DWP.
