Nine Foods Banned from School Dinners Under New Government Rules

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is endorsing a government initiative to address the rising rates of childhood obesity as new regulations are implemented. The Labour Party government is introducing a crackdown that will prohibit a series of popular foods from school canteens across the country.

New Standards to Promote Healthier Eating

Starting in September 2026, sweet puddings will be completely banned, and desserts must contain a minimum of 50 percent fruit under the updated guidelines. This decision follows alarming statistics showing that one in three children leaves primary school overweight or obese.

Health Minister Sharon Hodgson emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "Children are consuming twice the recommended amount of free sugar, and providing more nutritious meals at school is an effective strategy to ensure they adopt healthier eating habits."

She added, "We are committed to reducing the child obesity epidemic, and the new School Food Standards represent a crucial component in a broader set of measures aimed at fostering the healthiest generation of children ever."

Support from Celebrities and Campaigners

Dame Emma Thompson, an actor and Food Foundation Ambassador, expressed her enthusiasm for the changes. "I am absolutely thrilled that the government is revising the School Food Standards to guarantee that every child receives the delicious, nutritious school food they deserve," she said.

"School meals present a golden opportunity to support children's health, learning, and wellbeing. Getting this right means children across the nation can truly thrive. This is a landmark moment for families, the NHS, and the future of our young people," Thompson continued.

Jamie Oliver, a chef and long-time campaigner, highlighted the historical context of the issue. "Twenty years ago, dog food had higher standards than school dinners. I have been advocating for change ever since because I refuse to accept our kids being fed anything less than proper, nourishing meals," he remarked.

Oliver further noted, "School food is the UK's most important restaurant chain. From September, during term-time, schools will provide two-thirds of a child's daily diet, offering a massive opportunity to improve health on a large scale."

"My Good School Food Awards demonstrate that world-class meals are achievable right now, and every child deserves that same quality. I am delighted this government is now updating and enforcing these standards," he concluded.

List of Banned Foods

Under the new rules, the following items will be prohibited from school dinners:

  • Pizza
  • Fried fish
  • Chicken nuggets
  • Steamed puddings
  • Doughnuts
  • Ice cream
  • Waffles
  • Sausage rolls
  • Pastries

This list is not exhaustive, and additional treats and favourites could potentially be included as the government continues to consult on the changes. The move aims to create a healthier food environment in schools, contributing to long-term public health benefits.
