Welsh Man Dies in Spain After Suspected Drug Overdose

Tragic Death of Welsh Holidaymaker in Spain Ruled Drug-Related

A 36-year-old Welsh man died in a Spanish hospital while on holiday last year, with a coroner concluding his death was related to drug use. Paul William Jones, from Wattstown in the Rhondda, passed away at Marina Baixa Hospital in Alicante on February 27, 2025, after becoming increasingly unresponsive upon arriving in Spain.

Coroner's Findings on the Incident

At Pontypridd Coroners' Court, Coroner Rachel Knight stated that Mr. Jones likely took an overdose of illicit substances on February 22, 2025, before boarding a flight to Spain for his holiday. She noted that upon arrival, he became progressively unresponsive and was rushed to the hospital in Alicante. His condition continued to deteriorate over the following days, leading to his death.

The post-mortem examination revealed that Mr. Jones died from hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy, a severe brain injury caused by reduced oxygen supply to the brain. The coroner ruled that this injury occurred as a direct result of his drug use. Ms. Knight recorded a conclusion of drug-related death, with the medical causes listed as both hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy and drug overdose.
