Odin Bailey, a former Birmingham City academy graduate, has returned to the Championship by signing a three-year contract with Portsmouth. The 26-year-old attacking midfielder left League One play-off finalists Stockport County after their defeat to Bolton Wanderers at Wembley and has now joined Pompey on a free transfer.
Bailey's Journey Back to the Championship
Bailey's move to Portsmouth marks his first taste of Championship football since 2019, when he featured for Birmingham City alongside fellow academy graduate Jude Bellingham under manager Pep Clotet. He made eight appearances for Blues' first team before embarking on a journey through the lower leagues.
His career reignited with a move to Stockport County in 2023, where he helped the Hatters win the League Two title and secure back-to-back finishes in the League One play-offs. In his standout season, Bailey scored six goals and provided six assists in 57 appearances across all competitions.
Memorable Moment at St Andrew's
Bailey is fondly remembered by Birmingham City fans for scoring a late winner against Middlesbrough in front of The Tilton at St Andrew's in October 2019. That moment remains a highlight of his time at the club.
Portsmouth's Ambitions and Upcoming Fixtures
Portsmouth finished 18th in the Championship last season and will face Birmingham City twice over the Christmas period. The two sides meet at Fratton Park on December 12, followed by a return fixture at St Andrew's on New Year's Day. Bailey will be eager to make an impact against his former club.
According to a club statement, Bailey's signing is seen as a key addition to Portsmouth's squad as they aim to improve their standing in the Championship. The three-year deal reflects the club's confidence in his abilities.
