Firefighters were called to a large blaze at Jones Skips in Cross Street, Horseley Fields, Wolverhampton, just before 4:25am on Monday, July 6. Approximately 1,000 tonnes of recycling materials went up in flames, along with a large shed-like building and some machinery in the yard.
Firefighting Efforts and Progress
By 7:30am, West Midlands Fire Service reported that crews were making good progress in bringing the fire under control. A fire service spokesperson said: "On-site staff have been using a mechanical grabber to help us break up and move some of the recycling material." The fire service deployed a high volume pumping unit and hoses to tackle the blaze.
Road Closures and Safety Advice
Some nearby roads were closed to accommodate the firefighting equipment and ensure crew safety. The spokesperson added: "Anyone whose home or work place is affected by smoke should keep doors and windows closed as a precaution." Residents and businesses in the vicinity were advised to stay indoors and avoid the area.
Impact and Investigation
