UK Issues Travel Warning for Jamaica After Sexual Assaults

The Foreign Office has issued an updated travel warning for Jamaica, a popular Caribbean destination, following reports of sexual assaults involving British nationals in tourist areas, including beach resorts.

The warning comes after several incidents of rape and sexual assault were reported by British holidaymakers. The Foreign Office stated: "Some British nationals have reported incidents of rape and sexual assault in tourist areas, including beach resorts. In many cases, the alleged perpetrator was someone the victim met socially, for example at a bar, hotel, beach or excursion."

Although such incidents are infrequent, the Foreign Office emphasized that simple habits such as increased awareness and extra precaution can significantly reduce risk. Travelers are advised to avoid isolated areas, particularly at night, and to use reputable, licensed providers for services and excursions, including taxis. It is also recommended to carry out personal research and consult resort staff or tour operators.

Holidaymakers should not disclose personal information, accommodation or room numbers, or social media accounts to new acquaintances. Those traveling solo are urged to inform a trusted person at home or at the hotel of their whereabouts and ensure they have independent transport arrangements to return to their hotel.

If tourists experience sexual harassment or assault, or feel threatened or unsafe, they are advised to report it immediately to hotel staff or their tour operator. Additionally, they can contact the British High Commission in Kingston at +1 (876) 936 0700 or the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA), a dedicated police service providing safe and confidential investigative and emotional support, at +1 (876) 926 4079 or via email at [email protected].
