Wolverhampton Train Derailment: Services Resume Friday After Repairs
Wolverhampton Derailment: Trains Resume Friday

Network Rail has announced that train services between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury are expected to resume on Friday, May 8, following a low-speed freight train derailment in Oxley, Wolverhampton. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has caused significant disruption for passengers, with Transport for Wales (TfW) unable to operate its service to and from Birmingham Airport.

Since the derailment, railway teams have been working around the clock to repair the damaged track and overhead power lines. The derailed freight wagon, weighing approximately 100 tonnes, had to be safely rerailed before extensive repairs could begin. Network Rail confirmed that no injuries occurred, the wagon remained upright, and no other trains were involved in the incident.

Service Disruptions and Alternative Transport

Throughout the disruption, no trains have been able to run between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury. TfW has been forced to suspend its services to Birmingham Airport, with all journeys starting and ending at Shrewsbury. To assist passengers, TfW-organised buses have been running between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton.

Martin Colmey, operations director for Network Rail's Central route, stated: "This continues to be a hugely challenging situation, but we have made good progress and will continue to use all our teams and our experience to reopen the railway as quickly as we can." He added that the focus is to reopen the railway for the start of service on Friday, provided the recovery work continues as planned.

Extensive Damage and Repair Efforts

The low-speed derailment caused significant damage to both the track and overhead power lines, requiring extensive repairs. Network Rail teams have remained committed to fixing the issue as quickly and safely as possible. The challenges of rerailing a heavy wagon and repairing the infrastructure have contributed to the duration of the disruption.

Passengers are advised to check before traveling for the latest information. Network Rail expressed gratitude for everyone's patience while managing the situation.
