Network Rail has issued a significant update following a train derailment in the West Midlands. The incident involved a single freight wagon that derailed at low speed in the Oxley area of Wolverhampton on Tuesday evening, May 5, at approximately 8:30 pm.
No Injuries Reported
Fortunately, no injuries were sustained during the derailment. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is currently on site today, May 6, conducting an investigation into the cause of the incident.
Network Rail Statement
A spokesperson for Network Rail, the government body responsible for owning and maintaining the majority of the national rail network, stated: "A low-speed freight train derailment occurred in Oxley, Wolverhampton, at around 8:30 pm on Tuesday 5 May. One wagon derailed, and there were no injuries or other trains involved. The RAIB is currently on site. Once initial checks are complete, engineers will assess the damage and determine the work required to reopen the railway as soon as possible."
Disruption and Travel Advice
Services will be disrupted for the remainder of today, and passengers are advised to check National Rail Enquiries or contact their train operator for the latest travel information. National Rail has warned that major disruption is expected throughout the day.
Services from Wolverhampton to Stafford and Shrewsbury are currently affected. Bus replacement services are in place between Wolverhampton and Telford Central. Passengers should stay updated via live travel blogs and plan alternative routes where possible.
