The Enduring Mystery of a Birmingham Man's Ferry Disappearance

Nearly two decades have passed, yet the baffling disappearance of a young Birmingham man during a ferry trip to France remains an unsolved riddle that continues to haunt his family and investigators. Paul Carter, from Erdington, was last seen on April 21, 2007, after boarding a cross-channel ferry from Portsmouth to Saint-Malo with three colleagues.

A Night That Changed Everything

The 22-year-old was observed walking around the ship, reportedly looking for a place to sleep, but there was never any proof he disembarked when the ferry docked in France the following morning. His colleagues, who are not considered suspects by detectives, alerted authorities when he failed to meet them at the agreed time of 7:15 am.

West Midlands Police have launched a renewed appeal for information on the 19th anniversary of his disappearance. PC Shaun Reeve stated, "We know Paul boarded the ferry in the company of three colleagues and left at around 8:30 pm that night. They were due to arrive in France between 7 am and 8 am the following day. Paul and his friends agreed to meet up in the morning after going to bed—but Paul never appeared and no sign of him could be found."

A Mother's Unwavering Hope

Paul Carter's mother, Theresa, has spoken emotionally about her refusal to give up hope. "I was frightened to go out in case I missed him and he came home," she said last year. "He could phone me and might miss the call. You’re constantly living with the fear they will find him not alive."

She added, "I can’t give up on him. I truly believe mothers know when there’s a problem. He is alive until they prove otherwise." Her words underscore the profound personal tragedy behind this public mystery.

Police Appeal for Crucial Information

A force spokesperson emphasized that the investigation remains active and open-minded. "The 22-year-old, who lived in Birmingham, was never recorded getting off the ferry when it docked in France and there has been no trace of him being seen since. Our officers are keeping an open mind about what happened to Paul and are hoping to speak to anyone else who was on the ferry that night in case they remember seeing him."

The police have confirmed that the people Paul was traveling with have been interviewed and are not treated as suspects. They are urging anyone with information to come forward.
