Birmingham Rapist Deemed 'Dangerous' and 'Risk to Public' Locked Up for 20 Years

A man described as a 'dangerous' rapist who poses a significant risk to the public has been handed a 20-year extended sentence for his sexual attacks in the Birmingham area. Juma Ahmadi, aged 46, was told by a judge that he is 'unable to control his sexual urges' and requires close monitoring to ensure community safety.

Conviction and Sentencing Details

Juma Ahmadi was convicted by jurors at Wolverhampton Crown Court on multiple serious charges. The court found him guilty of five counts of rape, three sexual assaults, and one additional sexual offence. During the trial, Ahmadi, who had no prior convictions, was assisted by a Farsi interpreter.

On Wednesday, April 15, Judge Laura Hobson sentenced Ahmadi to a five-year prison term, which will run consecutively to a 20-year extended sentence. This extended sentence comprises 15 years in custody followed by a five-year extended licence period. The judge emphasized that Ahmadi must serve at least two-thirds of his extended sentence before the Parole Board can consider his release.

Judge's Assessment of Risk

Judge Hobson firmly rejected the defence's argument that Ahmadi should not be classified as a dangerous offender. She referenced a pre-sentence report that identified Ahmadi as posing a 'significant risk to the public of causing harm in the future through the commission of further offending.'

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Hobson stated, 'You are a man who is unable to control your sexual urges. You have shown no acceptance of your offending, nor any remorse. There is nothing I have seen or heard to suggest you have any insight into what you did or how you might avoid any repetition in the future.'

Victim Impact and Trial Proceedings

The court heard how Ahmadi's vile abuse only came to light after one of his victims attempted to take her own life. During the trial, multiple victims provided compelling evidence about their distressing experiences.

Judge Hobson praised the victims' courage, noting, 'The jury were plainly struck, as anybody would be, by their strength and honesty. Both of them gave evidence about very personal and distressing matters. Both of them told the court exactly what you had done to them.'

Additional Legal Measures

In addition to his prison sentence, Ahmadi has been made subject to a sexual harm prevention order and must remain on the sex offenders register for life. The court also heard that Ahmadi, now of no fixed abode but formerly from Hockley in Birmingham, had experienced trauma during his time living in Afghanistan.

Defence barrister Earl Pinnock acknowledged the seriousness of the crimes while maintaining that Ahmadi respects the jury's decision despite claiming innocence. However, Judge Hobson concluded that the extended sentence was necessary to properly manage the ongoing risk Ahmadi presents to public safety.
