12-Year-Old Boy to Face Trial for Alleged Sexual Assault and Wounding of Elderly Woman

A 12-year-old boy accused of sexually assaulting and wounding a woman aged in her 60s will face trial in October, a court has heard. The youth appeared via video link at Birmingham Crown Court, where he was not required to enter pleas to the charges, which also include unrelated allegations of intentional strangulation and theft.

Charges and Court Proceedings

The boy was charged by police last month with attacking a woman who was found injured at an address in Birmingham and rushed to hospital in a serious condition. During a 20-minute hearing on Tuesday, Judge Simon Drew KC further remanded the boy into secure accommodation.

Due to his age, the boy cannot be identified in media reports. He was not required to speak during the hearing, which was watched by his parents from the public gallery. Legal submissions were made by prosecutor Michelle Heeley KC and defence lawyer Sukhdev Garcha.

Upcoming Hearings and Trial Date

Judge Drew adjourned the case and ordered a plea and trial preparation hearing to take place in August. He stated, “It seems to me in the circumstances that he ought to be at court for that hearing.” The judge also ruled that either one of the boy’s parents or another appropriate adult should be allowed to sit next to him at court, outside of the dock.

The next confirmed hearing is scheduled for August 13, with the trial set to begin on October 5. This case highlights serious allegations involving a minor and underscores the legal processes in place for youth offenders in Birmingham.

The incident has drawn attention to community safety and the handling of juvenile crime, with authorities ensuring that all legal protocols are followed to address the charges thoroughly and fairly.
