M6 fuel thief jailed after week-long burglary spree

A prolific burglar has been sentenced to prison following a week-long crime spree across Leicestershire. Michael Maughan, 25, admitted to stealing cash and personal property from homes he targeted between January 3 and 10. During one burglary, he took the keys to a BMW 5 Series and then stole the vehicle itself.

Maughan also made off without paying for fuel from Rugby services, located at junction one of the M6, on February 11. He appeared at Leicester Crown Court on April 7 and pleaded guilty to seven counts of burglary, one count of theft for the BMW, and one count of making off without payment.

On Wednesday, April 22, he returned to court for sentencing and was jailed for three years and nine months. Additionally, over £2,000 in cash was seized from him, which will be used to compensate his victims.

Detective Inspector Jim Willoughby from Leicestershire Police commented: “This is a great result and has only been possible due to the tenacity of the investigation team to identify him as a suspect for these offences. We know the impact that burglaries have on our communities, whether it be residents or business owners, and we will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach and work to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. I hope those living right across Leicestershire will take some relief from the fact Maughan’s now in prison and unable to commit further offences.”
