A man who carried out a 'truly horrific and unprovoked' double stabbing at a London Underground station, laughing during police interviews afterwards, has been handed a significant prison sentence.
A Night of Unprovoked Violence
On the evening of March 27 last year, a group who had just finished a dance class entered Kennington Underground station. As they separated to different platforms around 10.30pm, Nicholas Orlando Green, 36, tapped into the station using his bank card.
He proceeded to a platform where, without warning, he launched a frenzied attack on a 44-year-old man. The victim was stabbed repeatedly for around 20 seconds, even after he had fallen to the floor. Hearing the commotion, a 42-year-old man rushed to intervene, only to be attacked himself and knocked to the ground.
Horrified members of the public eventually stepped in. Green then made his way to a lift, where he assaulted a 31-year-old woman before fleeing the station.
Life-Altering Injuries and a Frustrated Investigation
Both stabbing victims suffered catastrophic wounds. The 44-year-old man sustained multiple stab injuries to his chest and a fractured arm. The 42-year-old man was stabbed a total of 13 times. They were rushed to hospital with what the court described as 'life-altering physical and psychological injuries'.
British Transport Police (BTP) quickly identified Green from the bank card used to tap into the station. He was arrested at his flat on Kennington Park Road the following day. A search uncovered the card, trainers worn during the attack, and a freshly washed jacket.
During police interviews, Green showed a chilling lack of remorse. He repeatedly laughed, lied, and argued in a deliberate attempt to frustrate the investigation, officers said.
Justice Served After Trial
At Inner London Crown Court, Green was found guilty in September of two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent, one count of possessing a bladed article, and one count of common assault.
On Thursday, December 4, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Following the sentencing, BTP Detective Chief Inspector Paul Attwell stated: "This was a truly horrific and unprovoked attack that left two innocent men with life-altering physical and psychological injuries that they continue to recover from. Green has never provided an explanation of his torrent of violence."
"Our officers worked tirelessly to gather crucial evidence that helped the jury see through his lies and bring him to justice. We will stop at nothing to ensure violent offenders like Green are held to account and removed from the streets," he added.
