A group of travellers who set up an unauthorised encampment on a popular Birmingham park have been formally told to leave, following a fortnight of complaints from local residents and officials.
Deadline Issued Amid Escalating Concerns
A convoy of caravans arrived at Perry Park, off Church Road in Perry Barr, approximately two weeks ago, parking near a games court. Since their arrival, the council and local residents have reported a series of issues linked to the encampment.
Perry Barr Councillor Jon Hunt stated the situation was "escalating badly" and confirmed that the group had been served notice to move on Monday. He reported that fences had been broken and there was a constant flow of people moving on and off the site.
Reports of Damage and Distress
Local park users have described a scene of significant disruption and mess. One visitor provided a stark account of the conditions, stating: "Trash, food scraps, children's things, diapers, and old clothes are scattered throughout the park. And there's more trash every day."
The same witness reported evidence of vehicles being driven recklessly on the grass, leaving drift marks, and the presence of fire pits. "The park is in a sad state, it's impossible to walk there anymore," they added.
These accounts align with broader complaints received by the council, which include allegations of rubbish, fires being lit, and damage caused to park fences.
Council Vows to Protect Land
In response to the ongoing incursion, Birmingham City Council reiterated its stance on protecting public land. A council spokesperson said: "The council is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it."
This is not the first time the site, which is close to the Alexander Stadium, has faced such problems. The area has seen multiple incursions from travellers over the years, with previous encampments taking over a contractor car park. Despite the installation of gates and other preventative measures by the council, these have not stopped the camps from arriving.
The situation remains under active review as the deadline for the travellers to depart passes.
