West Bromwich Albion manager James Morrison made a touching gesture to honor the memory of lifelong supporter Mark Townsend ahead of the team's visit to Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium.
Emotional Return to Hillsborough
Albion traveled to Hillsborough on Saturday for the first time since September 28, 2024, when Townsend, aged 57, suffered a fatal heart attack during the previous match at the venue. The tragedy left his family, friends, and fellow fans devastated, particularly those in the Leppings Lane end.
Pre-Match Tribute
Speaking before the game, Townsend's brother Steve shared his emotions with the Express & Star, acknowledging the difficulty of returning to the scene. In a classy move, Morrison arranged for an Albion shirt bearing Townsend's name to be placed outside Hillsborough, accompanied by a personally signed card from the newly appointed head coach.
The tribute was widely praised as a respectful and heartfelt acknowledgment of the supporter's lifelong dedication to the club.
