Burnham Confirms £988 Monthly State Pension Payments

Andy Burnham has confirmed that state pensioners will receive £988 monthly payments from next April, as he commits to maintaining the triple lock when he becomes prime minister. The new Labour MP for Makerfield, widely expected to succeed Sir Keir Starmer, addressed the pledge during an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit.

Triple Lock Guarantee

Burnham acknowledged the “lot of debate” surrounding the policy but stressed it was “important that the commitment in the manifesto stands.” The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) triple lock ensures the full state pension rises by at least 2.5% annually. From April, the weekly rate will increase from £241 to £247, equating to approximately £988 per month.

Electoral Reform and Foreign Policy

During the Reddit AMA, Burnham described himself as a “strong supporter of electoral reform,” partly because it would enable “a more collaborative politics, less about point-scoring and more about problem-solving.” He pledged to persuade his party to include it in the next manifesto.

On foreign policy, Burnham said he would back Ukraine “100 per cent” and saw scope for a more ambitious trade agreement with the EU, building on existing government work. He also promised to ensure the defence investment plan is “fully funded,” following the resignation of Defence Secretary John Healey.

Modern Media Critique

Burnham criticised the “modern trend of only offering interviews on Teams or Zoom,” arguing it does not allow young people to convey their personality and passion.
