Matt Willis Opens Up About Jack Osbourne's Crucial Role in His Sobriety
Matt Willis, the former Busted star and television presenter, has shared a heartfelt account of how Jack Osbourne played an instrumental role in helping him achieve sobriety. In a recent podcast appearance, Willis reflected on a dark period in 2008 when his heavy drinking spiraled out of control, and it was Osbourne's intervention that ultimately set him on the path to recovery.
A Drunken Brawl and a Turning Point in New Zealand
Willis recalled a specific night in New Zealand where his addiction had taken a severe toll. He admitted to drinking from morning until bedtime, describing a chaotic scene that ended with him being attacked during a drunken brawl in a city center. After the incident, police escorted him back, leaving him battered and bruised. At the airport, while waiting to fly home, Willis resumed drinking at a bar, only to have Jack Osbourne approach him.
"He basically said, 'I see what you're doing, and I know you've got a problem, Matt,'" Willis recounted. Despite initially dismissing the concern and insisting everything was fine, Osbourne persisted, offering him a spot at a rehabilitation center in Los Angeles. Willis felt annoyed at the time and rejected the offer outright, but Osbourne remained patient, listening to his excuses without judgment.
From Rejection to Rehabilitation
Although Willis did not act immediately, boarding a plane back to London instead, the encounter left a lasting impact. "And then three weeks later I checked myself into rehab. So, he was on the money. It was an amazing thing he did," he revealed. This moment marked the beginning of his journey toward sobriety, which he has maintained for several years since.
Jack Osbourne, now 40, has his own history with addiction, having battled alcoholism and drug issues as a teenager and entering rehab at just 17. Since achieving sobriety in 2003, he has become a vocal advocate for mental health and addiction awareness, using his experiences to support others. Willis emphasized Osbourne's significance, calling him "the first person who saw the b*****t I was living in and called it out."
Personal Struggles and Ongoing Recovery
Willis also discussed the isolation he felt when entering rehab, as his then-girlfriend and now wife, Emma Willis, was away on a work trip. "That's when things got really scary and really, really dark," he said. The couple married just three days after he left rehab, and Willis has since explored his addiction journey in the 2023 documentary Matt Willis: Fighting Addiction, praised for its honest portrayal of relapse and recovery.
On the podcast, Willis admitted that while making amends is a key part of recovery, he has never formally apologized to Emma. "The one person I need to make amends to the most is Emma. My wife saw me at my darkest and stuck by me," he explained. He expressed uncertainty about finding the right words, preferring to show his gratitude through actions over time.
Jack Osbourne, who recently welcomed a baby, has been open about his addictive personality, noting that fame accelerated his struggles but that addiction felt inevitable for him. His willingness to share his story continues to inspire others, including Willis, who credits that pivotal airport conversation as a lifeline during his lowest moments.
