International Manhunt Ends in City Centre Arrest

A Sri Lankan national wanted by French authorities in connection with the alleged rape of a child has been apprehended in Liverpool city centre. Sujanth Ketheeswararasa, 30, was detained by officers from the National Crime Agency's extradition unit on Wednesday, November 19.

The arrest followed an international investigation into serious sexual offences allegedly committed in France. Ketheeswararasa had been the subject of a European arrest warrant issued by French judicial authorities.

NCA Prioritises Child Protection

Clare Meehan, from the NCA's joint international crime centre, emphasised the agency's commitment to safeguarding children. "There is no greater priority for the NCA than protecting children from sexual abuse," she stated.

Meehan confirmed that collaborative work with both domestic and international partners led to the successful location and arrest of the suspect. The operation demonstrates the effectiveness of cross-border law enforcement cooperation in tackling serious crimes.

Extradition Process Underway

Ketheeswararasa made his initial court appearance in London on Thursday, November 20, where he was remanded in custody pending extradition proceedings.

The defendant is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court via video link on Thursday, November 27. A full extradition hearing has been listed for March 26, 2026, where the court will consider the French authorities' formal request for his transfer.

The case highlights the continuing cooperation between UK and European law enforcement agencies, even following changes to jurisdictional arrangements in recent years. The National Crime Agency continues to work closely with international partners to locate and apprehend individuals wanted for serious offences abroad.
