Tragic Death of 12-Year-Old Girl After Branch Falls from Surrey Tree
A 12-year-old girl, Brooke Wiggins, tragically lost her life after being struck by a falling branch while playing on a rope swing in Banstead, Surrey. The incident occurred just days before her 13th birthday on November 9, 2024, and was the subject of a recent inquest at South London Coroner's Court on April 22, 2026.
Inquest Reveals Safety Failures and Council Oversight
The inquest heard that the tree, maintained by Surrey County Council, had been inspected in May 2022 and was due for a re-inspection in May 2024, which never took place. Christian Weaver, representing Brooke's father, Lee Wiggins, argued that if the inspection had been conducted, any rope swing found on the tree should have been removed according to council policy. Surrey County Council representatives countered that expert evidence suggested an inspection might not have led to a significantly different outcome.
Family Tributes to a "Beautiful and Loving" Daughter
In emotional statements read by assistant coroner Ivor Collett, Brooke's mother, Claire Etherington, described her as a "beautiful, fun, caring and loving girl" who lit up every room. She highlighted Brooke's passions for dancing, art, singing, and photography, noting her pride in self-expression and how she "never went anywhere without her eyelashes on." Brooke's father, Lee Wiggins, called her an "amazing young woman" who was "bright" and "very funny," expressing devastation over her loss and questioning why proper safety measures were not implemented.
Coroner's Remarks and Ongoing Investigation
Opening the hearing, Mr. Collett acknowledged the profound sadness of the case, emphasizing the unending pain felt by the family. The inquest continues as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding this preventable tragedy, with hopes that it may bring some closure and understanding to Brooke's loved ones.
