Two More Arrested in Birmingham Counter-Terrorism Probe Over Alleged Jewish Site Arson Plot
Counter Terrorism Police have confirmed two further arrests in connection with an alleged conspiracy to commit arson at a site linked to the Jewish community, as part of an ongoing investigation that has now seen nine individuals detained over three days.
Details of the Latest Arrests
The most recent arrests involve a 19-year-old man and a 26-year-old man, both apprehended in Watford on Tuesday. This follows the detention of a 26-year-old man and two women aged 50 and 59 in a vehicle near Birmingham on Monday, all in relation to the alleged conspiracy. Both men remain in police custody.
Those detained are suspected of involvement in plotting an arson attack at an undisclosed location associated with the Jewish community. Seven others previously arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson remain under investigation and have been released on bail under strict conditions.
Broader Context of the Investigation
The arrests come as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer vowed an unwavering battle against antisemitism following a recent wave of attacks. "We won't relent in our fight against antisemitism and terror. Any perpetrators will feel the full force of the law," Sir Keir wrote on social media platform X.
Since late March, a string of arson attacks has targeted Jewish community sites, including:
- Ambulances in Golders Green, north-west London
- A synagogue and a former Jewish charity
- An attempted arson at Finchley Reform Synagogue on April 15
- An incident involving a drone near the Israeli embassy
On Tuesday, a 17-year-old boy pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates' Court to arson not endangering life following an attack on Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow on Saturday. CCTV footage showed the defendant scaling the boundary wall, breaking a window, and throwing a lit object through it.
Police Response and Ongoing Efforts
Senior national co-ordinator of Counter Terrorism Policing, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, stated: "Our investigations continue at pace, and we are continuing to identify and arrest suspects who we believe were involved, or planning, the recent arson attacks in north-west London."
She added: "We've now had the first conviction in relation to this recent spate of arson attacks and seven others have been charged. We remain determined to identify, arrest and charge all those who have been involved in the recent criminal activity."
In total, 23 individuals have been arrested in connection with the series of attacks, with two further suspects still outstanding in the investigation. The court was informed that the ongoing probe remains active as authorities work to address these serious threats to community safety.
