Walsall MP Expresses Shock Over Morrisons Manager Dismissal

Wendy Morton, the Member of Parliament for Aldridge-Brownhills near Walsall in the West Midlands, has publicly expressed her shock and dismay after a Morrisons store manager was sacked for confronting a serial shoplifter. The incident, which occurred in December, involved the manager defending himself and the store from an aggressive individual attempting to steal alcohol.

Manager Dismissed After Decades of Service

Sean Egan, 46, who had worked for Morrisons for nearly three decades, was dismissed from his position as local branch manager at the Aldridge store. The dismissal followed an altercation with a shoplifter described as "aggressive" and "strong as a bear." During the confrontation, the shoplifter spat in Mr. Egan's face multiple times, leading to a physical clash where they "clashed heads."

Mr. Egan explained his actions on ITV's Good Morning Britain, stating, "I lost my job of 29 years with Morrisons because I was in a challenging situation where a shoplifter spat at me several times. I reacted in a way where I had to defend myself and I was put in a situation where, not only to defend myself, but to ensure that the customers and the staff around me that they were safe also."

MP Calls for Reinstatement

In a letter posted on social media and addressed to Morrisons chief executive Rami Baitieh, MP Wendy Morton described Mr. Egan as a "hero" among her constituents. She wrote, "Throughout my tenure as the Member of Parliament for Aldridge-Brownhills I have worked with Sean on a number of occasions, and I have always found him to be diligent and most pleasant. I was therefore shocked to learn that he had been dismissed for apprehending a shoplifter."

Ms. Morton urged the supermarket to reconsider its decision, adding, "Sean has been a loyal employee of your company for some two decades, and I believe Morrisons should rethink this position, and re-instate him to his former position forthwith. I believe it is incumbent upon retailers to support their staff when taking a stand against criminal activity and not to punish them in such manner."

Police Commissioner Expresses Bewilderment

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, speaking on Good Morning Britain, expressed his bewilderment over the case. He stated, "If (store managers) feel able to intervene and they feel they can do that safely, we always want them to do that. We want the public to be part of the fight against crime." This comment highlights the broader issue of public involvement in crime prevention and the support expected for those who take action.

Morrisons Responds with Safety Guidelines

In response to the incident, a Morrisons spokesperson issued a media statement emphasizing the company's safety protocols. The spokesperson said, "We have very clear guidance, procedures and controls in place to protect our colleagues and customers from the risk of harm, which must be strictly followed. These include detailed procedures for handling shoplifting incidents, which are in place to protect both the colleague involved and surrounding colleagues and customers, and which seek to de-escalate and calmly control the situation."

The statement underscores the supermarket's commitment to safety but has sparked debate over whether such policies adequately support employees in dangerous situations. Mr. Egan reported receiving overwhelming support from the public, describing it as "outstanding," which contrasts with the company's decision to dismiss him.

This case raises important questions about employee rights, safety protocols, and the role of retailers in supporting staff against criminal activities. As the community rallies behind Mr. Egan, the outcome of Ms. Morton's appeal to Morrisons remains to be seen, potentially setting a precedent for how similar incidents are handled in the future.
