Local Campaigner Voices Community Concerns Over HMO Proposal

Residents in Handsworth have voiced strong opposition to plans that would see a family home transformed into a six-bedroom House in Multiple Occupation (HMO). The proposal for 113 Onibury Road has been met with widespread disapproval from the local community, who fear it will exacerbate existing issues with fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour.

Details of the Proposed HMO Conversion

According to the submitted planning documents, the conversion would create a property featuring five bedrooms with en-suites and one bedroom with a separate bathroom. The plans also include a modern kitchen fitted with high-specification appliances and improved soundproofing measures. The developers describe it as "high-quality, professionally managed accommodation for young professionals" and argue that the scale is proportionate to the property, avoiding over-intensification of use.

Community Backlash and Planning Process

Local campaigner Keisha Hamilton has been actively gathering the opinions of residents, reporting unanimous opposition. "I went to Onibury Road as soon I got notified, I went door knocking and the people were like 'we can't have this here'", she stated. Hamilton highlighted that the road already contains two other HMOs and exempt housing, with residents struggling to comprehend how six people would live in the property. The planning statement counters these concerns by assuring that all bedrooms will meet internal space standards and that communal areas will be adequate, with professional management to minimise disturbance. The final decision now rests with the council, with the plan due to be reviewed in due course.
